Be Responsive Meet Up — A Summary

11-Feb-2016

Written by Josh Stranger, Designer/Developer at Blick Creative

I recently attended a Be Responsive Meet Up with a few of our other Designer/Developers, which focused on hypothesis driven development and managing CSS in a state of flux.

The first presentation, Utilising Hypothesis Driven Development Practises in Agile Product Delivery, led by Benson Tait, explained that you can get a really accurate and refined result if you do research with hypothesis and experimentation. The process he described was split into six steps:

  1. Formulate your hypothesis
  2. Define the experiment
  3. Build the experiment
  4. Conduct the experiment
  5. Evaluate your experiment
  6. Find out if your proposed hypothesis is either a pass or fail

After this process you can then use the data in your project development or keep on further refining through more hypothesis depending on how much time you have available.

The second presentation, Managing CSS in a State of Flux, was led by James Coleman from BugHerd. He talked about how his company had gone through many different changes for CSS implementation before settling on what they use currently. He informed us that in order to implement change effectively you need to be a good leader. James made reference to the eight steps to lead change by John Kotter:

  1. Create a sense of urgency
  2. Build a guiding coalition
  3. Form a strategic vision and initiative
  4. Enlist a volunteer army
  5. Enable action by removing barriers
  6. Generate short term wins
  7. Sustain acceleration
  8. Institute change

James concluded that following this process would enable you to adopt and manage change in your company in a much easier and more effective fashion.
