Italian Jewels: Bulgari Style - Exhibition Review

13-Oct-2016

Written by Zoe Cartledge - PR, Copywriter & Communications Coordinator at Blick Creative

When I heard that ‘Italian Jewels: Bulgari Style’ was coming to town, my proverbial socks were blown off and swiftly put back on again to go to the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) and bask in all of Bulgari’s glory. The exhibition was centered on Hollywood’s Golden Age of Cinema and the true beauties that championed the Italian design house’s style — and had the airs to match the jewels.

I found the exhibition itself was really well put together, with mirrors and other dark, sleek reflective surfaces positioned around the room to reflect rare images of Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren and Grace Kelly adorned in Bulgari earrings, necklaces, rings and brooches - which I thought was a really clever use of space and material to transport the viewer into the mesmerising world of Bulgari. However, as I pressed my face up against each window to marvel at some of the most beautiful jewelry I’ve ever seen, I found myself wanting to know more about how it was made, who else had worn it and how much it’s currently worth – I know, dream on girl.

Speaking of dreams (and worth), Elizabeth Taylor was heavily featured throughout the display, which was not surprising since she had such a penchant for jewelry. In fact, she would reportedly demand that the film studio would supplement her pay with jewelry, as she knew that a necklace dripping with rubies, emeralds, sapphires and diamonds would be worth much more than a paper cheque in years to come. I personally loved how the exhibition was centered on Ms. Taylor, as I find her charm, wit and personality inspiring and far removed from the ‘over-sharers’ of my generation.

If I'm allowed one critique, I'd say more information should be provided on the jewelry, where the back-story is explained in more illustrative detail. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed ‘Italian Jewels: Bulgari Style’ and really appreciated how the exhibition wasn’t so much a reflection of Bulgari’s past; instead it showed how progressive the house really is and their dedication to craftsmanship and timeless design.

Italian Jewels: Bulgari Style is showing at the NGV until 29 January 2017.
