Respond Mega Meet Up

Written by Andrea Boundy, Head of Design and Digital

Melbourne was very lucky to have a mega Meet Up event organised by Web Directions who joined forces with the Be Responsive , MelbCSS  and MelbJS Meet Up groups. The event was so popular that some attendees had to make do with standing room only.

Coming off the back of Web Direction’s ‘Respond’ conference, USA speaker Jen Simmons from Mozilla and the W3C’s CSS Working Group, and local talent Ryan Seddon from Zendesk hit the stage.

Jen’s presentation particularly hit a chord as she discussed ways to progress our web layouts using the CSS of today without having to wait for it to be supported in all browsers. Her catch cry ‘use it and don’t use it - at the same time’ was explained through beautiful examples, such as her recreation of a classic jazz poster as a web page. Plus her presentation included a puppy riding a unicorn... what’s not to like!

Ryan discussed the new Houdini set of emerging Javascript web standards which are currently available in testing environments only. He focussed on a handful of the available tools within Houdini, such as how to dig down into the internals of CSS, use paint, new layout methods such as masonry and much more.

Jen’s full length conference talk was video recorded, and her slide deck is also available on her website. Very entertaining and well worth a watch if you work with CSS.
