Email newsletters are great for forming and maintaining a bond with your customers, even during times when they aren’t actively looking to buy. In fact, according to the Nielsen Norman Group’s Email Newsletter Usability report, readers actually feel emotionally attached to their email newsletters. A good newsletter can almost make your customer feel like they’re getting an update from a friend.


However, setting up and sending out a newsletter (and, for added effectiveness, complementing this with website and social media updates) can seem like an overwhelming task for some business owners.


To get you started, here are four tips for effective eNews design:

  1. Email subject lines that include the words "thank you" have the highest above-average engagement levels. (Adestra, 2015) (Source:
  2. Two-thirds of emails are read on either smartphones or tablets (Source: So, make sure your email newsletter (and indeed, website) is responsive, meaning it can adapt to being read on different devices!
  3. People like to be informed of sales, but selling shouldn’t be the main focus of an email newsletter. Just imagine you’re talking to a friend who has taken the time to listen to you—mention the sale and move on to sharing stories and information that is useful to them.
  4. Be aware that the average person spends less than one minute reading a newsletter. So, keep your content scannable with content blocks, brief blurbs and bullet points. Make it short, sharp and visually appealing.
