UX Australia 2015 Redux: Melbourne

UX Australia runs user experience conferences and workshops, with the main four-day conference having been in Brisbane earlier this year. As a spin off from the main conference, a one-day ‘mini’ conference was held in Melbourne called ‘Redux’, showcasing an array of (predominantly) local speakers.

A packed program of 13 speakers with topics as diverse as ‘The Power of Storytelling’ and ‘Reinventing the ATO’ made for a very inspiring day.

The 12 Interviewees

One of of my personal highlights was a presentation by Elle Geraghty and Karina Smith entitled ‘Qualities of the ultimate content strategist and designer’. Elle and Karina focussed on the ‘soft’ skills required in our profession which are often not explicitly part of a position description but make the difference between a ‘good’ designer and a ‘great’ designer. They interviewed 12 people who are leaders in their respective fields to uncover what had helped them succeed.

They discovered that in all of their journeys, four core themes emerged:

  • Community
  • Curiosity
  • Action/Gumption, and
  • Honesty

Suggested books on design and research Suggested self-improvement Activity

Next they invited the audience to reflect on a list of attributes up on the screen and to choose one they thought they were good at, and one they would like to improve on. We then had to discuss these with our neighbour. Next they provided us with some practical advice on how we could pro-actively improve in our chosen area, and challenged us to choose one way we would commence our journey of improvement tomorrow. Well, I have walked away with a very big reading list for the Christmas break!

All presentation descriptions and slides from the day are available on the UX Australia website and I strongly encourage you to take a look. Excitingly the full four-day conference (two days of workshops, two days of conference) will be held in Melbourne next year in August.
